Do Customers Really Find Contractors Through AI Search Now? Here’s What the Data Says
Posted in :
I was talking to an HVAC contractor in Marysville a few weeks back. Good guy, been in business 15 years, solid reviews on Google. He asked me point-blank: “Ken, are people actually finding contractors through ChatGPT or is that just hype?”
It’s a fair question. And the answer is no, it’s not hype. Do customers really find contractors through AI search now? Yes, and the numbers are moving faster than most people realize.
Yes, Homeowners Are Already Using AI to Find Contractors
This isn’t a future trend. It’s happening right now, in your market, for your category of work.
When a homeowner needs a plumber or a roofer, a growing chunk of them are skipping Google entirely. They’re opening ChatGPT or asking Google’s AI Overview for a recommendation. The AI reads their question, pulls from its data sources, and spits out a short list of contractors. The homeowner calls one of those names. That’s the whole funnel.
The Numbers That Prove It: 45% and Growing
BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 45% of consumers now use AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity to find local services. A year before that survey, it was 6%. That’s not gradual growth, that’s a step change.
A 2026 Scorpion national study found that 22% of homeowners now go to ChatGPT first when they need a contractor, before they even open Google. And Whitespark’s Q2 2025 research found Google’s AI Overviews appear in 68% of local business searches, sitting above the traditional results.
AI is now the third most-used discovery channel for local businesses, behind only Google and Facebook. It’s already passed Yelp. If you’re ignoring this, you’re ignoring a channel that’s growing faster than any other.
How AI Search Actually Works When Someone Looks for a Contractor
Here’s where most people get confused. They think AI search is just Google with a chatbot wrapper. It’s not.
When a homeowner asks ChatGPT “who’s a good roofer near Marysville,” ChatGPT isn’t pulling your Google ranking. It’s doing its own research across the web, verifying who you are, what you do, and whether third-party sources back you up.
AI Doesn’t Just Copy Google, It Acts as an Independent Referee
Think of it this way. Google ranks you based on your website’s SEO. AI recommends you based on whether the broader internet ecosystem agrees you’re a legitimate, trustworthy business.
Those are two different tests. You can pass one and fail the other. Plenty of contractors with strong Google rankings are completely invisible in AI recommendations.
ChatGPT uses Bing-backed web search to retrieve real-time local data. So your Bing Places profile matters directly, not just your Google presence. Perplexity pulls from a wide mix of sources. Google AI Overviews leans heavily on your Google Business Profile. Each AI is doing its own version of the background check.
And since there’s currently no paid placement in ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for organic recommendations, the businesses that show up do so because they’ve built genuine authority signals. You can’t buy your way in right now.
Why 98.8% of Contractors Don’t Show Up in AI Recommendations
ChatGPT recommends just 1.2% of local businesses. That means almost every contractor in your area is invisible to it. That’s not a knock on those businesses. Most of them simply haven’t done anything to be seen by AI.
The Most Common Reasons AI Skips Your Business
The AI is looking for consistent, structured, verifiable signals. If those signals aren’t there, it moves on to someone else. The most common gaps I see:
- Incomplete or unclaimed Google Business Profile
- No Bing Places profile at all (which means no ChatGPT visibility)
- Inconsistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across directories
- No schema markup on the website, so AI can’t easily read what services you offer
- Thin or missing presence on citation sources like BuildZoom, which AI engines rely on to verify contractor licenses and permit history
In a 2026 local service audit, BuildZoom appeared in ChatGPT citations for 100% of the trades tested. If you’re not on it, or your profile is incomplete, that’s a gap the AI notices.
What Signals AI Uses to Decide Who to Recommend
This is the part that matters most for what you actually do about it.
Google Business Profile: The Single Most Important Asset
Your Google Business Profile is the foundation. Google AI Overviews pulls from it directly. ChatGPT and Perplexity reference it heavily as a verification source. An incomplete, incorrect, or missing profile makes you invisible across multiple AI platforms at once.
This means your categories, services, hours, photos, and review responses all need to be current and complete. If you want a detailed walkthrough of what that looks like for a trades business, I wrote a full guide here: Google Business Profile Optimization for HVAC Contractors: A Step-by-Step Guide to Ranking in the Local Pack.
Bing Places, NAP Consistency, and Schema Markup
Claim and complete your Bing Places profile. This is a direct pipeline into ChatGPT recommendations and most contractors haven’t touched it.
NAP consistency is the most common reason AI skips a business. If your address is listed differently across Yelp, Angi, your website, and Google, the AI sees conflicting data and loses confidence. It moves on.
LocalBusiness, FAQPage, and Service schema markup on your website tells AI systems exactly what you do and where you do it. Pages with proper schema are disproportionately cited in AI responses. It’s not optional anymore if you want to show up.
Does Ranking #1 on Google Mean You’ll Show Up in ChatGPT?
No. I get this question a lot. Ranking at the top of Google is great, but it doesn’t translate directly into AI recommendations. The AI isn’t reading Google’s ranking. It’s doing its own evaluation.
A contractor with a modest Google ranking but a complete Bing Places profile, consistent NAP data, solid reviews, and good schema markup can absolutely outrank a top-10 Google result inside ChatGPT. They’re different systems with different criteria.
This is actually good news if you’re behind on traditional SEO. AI search gives you a second shot at visibility if you move on the right signals now.
Why Early Movers Have a Time-Limited Advantage Right Now
AI search adoption is growing fast, but optimization for it is still rare. The vast majority of local contractors haven’t taken any deliberate steps to appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. That gap won’t last forever.
What This Means for Contractors in Competitive Local Markets
In Marysville and the broader Snohomish County area, the market is getting more crowded as the population grows past 73,000. Contractors with 80 or more reviews at 4.7 stars or higher consistently outperform competitors in the Map Pack, and that same review volume and recency feeds AI recommendation confidence.
Right now, if you’re one of the first contractors in your category to get your AI visibility dialed in, you’re likely to hold that position for a while. The businesses that move early tend to accumulate the citations, reviews, and structured data that AI systems keep referencing. That compounds over time.
Semrush data shows traffic arriving from AI recommendations converts at 4.4 times the rate of standard search. People who get a name from an AI recommendation are already sold on the idea of calling that person. That’s a very different lead quality than someone browsing search results.
How to Start Making Your Contracting Business Visible to AI Search
The honest answer is that doing this well involves a lot of moving parts. You’ve got your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, NAP audits across dozens of directories, schema markup on your site, citation building on sources like BuildZoom, and then the ongoing review management that feeds AI confidence over time.
Each piece matters. And they all have to work together. A gap in one area can cancel out the work you’ve done in another.
If you’re running a trades business in Snohomish County and you’re already stretched thin, trying to manage all of this yourself is a tough ask. I put together a quick free check so you can at least see where you currently stand: run your free AI visibility check here.

The short version: yes, homeowners are using AI to find contractors today. The businesses that show up are the ones that built the right signals. Most haven’t. That’s the window.
